Journey had found magic, and then some!
Good thing she had a new friend by her side.
Chapter Fourteen
âI donât want to die! I havenât even hit puberty!â Edison buried his face in Journeyâs back.
Theyâd hidden under the worktable together. âEdison! Let go!â Shaking him off, she inched out from under it. The robot, she saw, was just as scared as they were, peeping at her from around the table and mimicking her motions. âItâs okay. Come on,â she encouraged him.
The robot waddled toward her, wobbling as he grew accustomed to his newfound mobility.
âEasy,â Journey told him.
The gears inside the robotâs glass heart purred, and he steadied himself.
Journey motioned to herself. âMy name is Journey.â
Buddy regarded her, eyes dilating. âJeronicusâs granddaughter.â He imitated what heâd heard her saying earlier!
âAnd this is Edison,â Journey added, gesturing to the boy, who looked up.
He bonked his head on the bottom of the table. âOw! Iâm okay!â He crawled out from under it and tentatively clung to Journeyâs back. Finally, he gave a timid wave at Buddy. âHi!â
âWhy didnât you work for my grandfather?â Journey asked.
Buddyâs eyes enlarged. âIt will work. At least I have to believe it will,â he parroted back.
Journey gasped. âThatâs it.â She rose. âBelief! It collapsed the wave function. It mustâve been part of the formula. He works because we believe,â she told Edison, reviewing the page of the robotâs designs.
âWell, of course we believe. Heâs hovering above your head,â he said matter-of-factly. Sheer horror crossed his face as he realized what heâd said, and he reversed. âHeâs hovering above your head!â He ran and hid under the ladder of a stripped loft bed. âMommy!â
Journey looked. Her jaw dropped, along with the page in her hands.
Buddy was levitating, somersaulting clumsily through the air. He knocked into wheels hanging from a wall, and then into ropes on a pulley system, as he tried to get his bearings.
Journey winced. âBe careful!â
Finally, after drifting helter-skelter, Buddy hovered evenly in place.
A whimsical wind blew through the workshop, and Journeyâs cracked red boots lifted from the peeling floor. She began to rise high into the air. She was flying! She was actually flying! Buddy orbited around her like a satellite while Edison anxiously gazed up at them through the rungs of the ladder. Buddy swam expertly through the air, and Journey glided gracefully after.
Edison stepped out from under the loft bed, and the magic swept him off his feet. He grabbed hold of the ladder to prevent himself from floating, too, but his boots continued skyward. âWhatâs happening?!â His fingers lost purchase then grasped on to the headboard.
âEdison, just let go! Itâll be all right!â Journey vowed.
âItâs not gonna be all right!â Edisonâs grip slipped. âMom!â He grabbed a wooden beam jutting from the wall. Then he took a breath and let go, suspended in midair. He gawked then eyed his hands and body before starting to paddle his arms and kick his legs. Meanwhile, Journey and Buddy flitted around playfully, somersaulting and pirouetting with elegance.
What unexpected enjoyment theyâd uncovered!
âWhoâs there in my workshop?!â came a voice.
